About Us
Our Baltimore-born founder, Brendan Schreiber, began Schreiber Brothers Development with the intent to break the mold of the typical developer. He knew it was possible for developers to grow a large, profitable business while promoting balanced, sustainable growth, without displacing current residents. Ten years into a career that bridged economic analysis in the U.S. government, diplomacy abroad, and construction management in the private sector, Brendan decided that it was time to redirect his efforts back home. With the help of countless advisers and supporters, he sought out to prove that a triple-bottom-line approach to real estate development could and would take hold in Baltimore.
The company is affectionately named to harken back to the old Schreiber Brothers Market of the early 1900s, which was owned and operated by two generations of his family for a half century. Located in historic Lexington Market, Schreiber Brothers Market was once the largest grocer in Baltimore City and a pillar of the community. This commitment to Baltimore is a cornerstone of Schreiber Brothers Development's mission.
At the heart of our business is a firm commitment to impact investing: engaging closely with the community to ensure that our product provides a net-positive impact for all involved, including our investors and clients. We select and design our projects to thoughtfully address the preferences of the community and utilize only sustainable building practices. We engage with community leaders early and often to be certain of mutually shared goals. From there, we structure the project to generate solid earnings. As such, we are able to offer products that generate strong returns against the three bottom lines referenced earlier: economic, social, and environmental.
Our core business focuses on scatter-site investments that promote mixed-income, walkable communities through the development of affordable rental housing and homeownership opportunities for both low-income residents and at-risk populations. We believe that clustering low-income housing can exacerbate the same problems it seeks to address. Rather, the economic diversity of mixed-income communities promotes the type of growth that is more sustainable in the long term. So we work methodically to ensure that our projects simultaneously raise surrounding property values and don't crowd anyone out. Market-rate housing is very much a part of this model. We do not believe in affordable housing simply for its own sake; instead, we use sophisticated analysis to assess housing needs on a block-by-block and community-by-community basis.
It is likely no surprise, then, that we are firmly committed to social justice and equality of opportunity. To this end, we build the following into our projects whenever we possibly can:
- LEED certification (or seeking LEED-equivalency) to minimize resource use and keep residents' utility costs more affordable over time.
- Labor sourced from within the community and engaging in workforce development for green/high-skilled jobs.
- Close and meaningful work with community leaders and members to ensure that projects have strong community support.
- Promotion of local business development over chains, and providing affordable space for community organizations and non-profits.
- Deconstruction and donation of building materials, in lieu of demolition.

President
Brendan Schreiber is an expert in residential construction management and sustainable development, with a decade of experience in the field. As a Presidential Management Fellow with the U.S. Department of Energy, he served as an energy analyst in Washington, D.C. and as the Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy representative to China in the U.S. embassy in Beijing. In this capacity he developed expertise in sustainable construction and development, as well as economic modeling techniques and applications.
Following his time in government, he joined Harry Braswell Inc (HBI), a high-end residential and commercial construction company in the Washington, DC area. He joined HBI as a day laborer with the goal of rising through the ranks to ensure that he would learn every skill he could from the ground-up. Equally important was his desire to understand the economic realities and daily struggles of every worker, regardless of position.
Upon his departure after five years with HBI, he had spent his final two years as the head of an entirely new division of the company, Concierge Home Services. His charge was to create and implement an innovative model for flat-rate subscription construction services in partnership with the president of HBI. Almost from scratch, Mr. Schreiber grew the business to a portfolio of nearly $2 million in annual revenue, with strong profit margins and a staff of six in under three years. He managed project acquisition and execution, construction estimating and project management, high-level strategy, staffing and marketing, and capital procurement in partnership with HBI's president.
Mr. Schreiber is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University, and holds a Masters Degree in International Studies and International Economics from Johns Hopkins SAIS in Washington, DC. He holds LEED accreditation (BD+C) and speaks Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.
